Ice Buckles During the Battle on the Bago, 36 Vehicles Sink

The “Battle on the Bago” ice fishing tournament draws hundreds of fishermen annually. Most years the participants spend their time trying to land the biggest catch from depths of Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago. This year some slightly larger “catches” had to be hauled in.

According to multiple reports, despite 12 inches of ice, 36 cars and trucks broke through. 18 of the vehicles were completely submerged.

It appears that fishermen parking their cars too close to each other lead to the ice’s collapse. “We had cars parked on the ice like it was a parking lot,” said a Winnebago county sheriff’s dispatcher on Twincities.com, “It was just too much for the ice conditions.”

All of the vehicles were recovered and no one was injured.
