Alton Jones Gets a $9,000 Classic Bonus

   03.01.12

Alton Jones had barely settled into his seat in front of a microphone at a post-Classic press conference when officials presented him with two giant cardboard bonus checks from BoatUS Angler and Toyota totaling $9,000, to add on to the $30,000 he had just earned from B.A.S.S. for a 4th place finish on Shreveport’s Red River.

“Man, I’m thrilled! Thank you so much,” said Jones, slapping a high-five with the checks’ presenter. “My wife Jimmy Sue, is gonna be so thrilled that I’m sending her a text of the good news right now,” added Jones, seconds before media began asking how he managed to catch 45-pounds of largemouth over the three previous days.

Jones was one of the first pros to sign-up for the Toyota Trucks Bonus Bucks when it was launched five seasons ago by entering the Toyota Sequoia he uses to tow his Skeeter Boat in the now popular cash bonus program.

“I’ve won $44,500 from the Toyota Trucks Bonus Bucks program since I signed-up in 2008. It’s one of the greatest cash bonus programs in the history of our sport. If you fish tournaments, you need to consider towing with a Toyota and signing up for Bonus Bucks. It literally pays to be a part of Bonus Bucks,” concluded Jones, who needed very little gas money to fish this year’s Bassmaster Classic, considering he never fished further than a mile from the launch ramp.

Obviously knowing a great deal when he sees one, Jones was also quick to sign-up for the much newer BoatUS Angler “Weigh-to-Win” program. “I bought a membership to BoatUS Angler because it’s good to know somebody has your back if you have a mechanical issue on the road, or on the water,” said Jones. “And much like Bonus Bucks, throwing tournament cash bonus money on top of a great product is a no brainer,” said Jones, who has been on tour for 21 years, and used six-inch green pumpkin YUM Dinger in warming tournament backwaters to catch his fish on the Red River.

Unlike Alton, you don’t have to be a full-time pro, and you don’t even have to win your tournament to win the cash bonuses; you simply have to be the highest eligible finisher in your event.
