675 Russian Anglers Rescued from Ice Floe

After a large section of ice broke free from the island of Sakhalin off the Pacific coast of Siberia, 675 Russian fishermen and women were set adrift. By late Sunday, the Russian government reported that it had successfully completed a rescue effort and all the fishermen and women were safe.
In order to rescue the stranded anglers Russian authorities had to employ 48 people, 11 ships, and two helicopters.
The anglers had been fishing through holes bored in the ice at the time the section of the ice broke free.
According the BBC, Taymuraz Kasayev, a member of the emergencies ministry, said the residents had been told to stay away from the ice. “We warned people through the media that going out onto the ice on this stretch of coastline is extremely dangerous and is not allowed.”
After their rescue the anglers were examined and it was determined no one was in need of medical attention.
