Abel Launches New Super 9/10N Reel for Roosters, Albies, Dorado, Stripers

A precision-machined fly reel expressly designed and engineered to accommodate the high speed runs of roosterfish, albacore, false albacore, striped bass, dorado and similar saltwater game is now available from Abel Reels. The Super 9/10N (for narrow) model is a lightweight large arbor reel that will handle blistering runs and retrieve line quickly.

“Our new Super 9/10N is a companion reel to the previously released 7/8N. We’ve engineered the new model to hold a 9-weight line with 225 yards of 20-pound backing; a 10-weight with 175 yards of 30-pound. Substitute 50-pound Spectra and the capacity increases to 350-yards with a 10-weight line,” said Don R. Swanson, Abel president.

Reels are priced at $825; extra spools are $370.

Machined entirely in the USA from prime grade metals, the Super 9/10N utilizes Abel’s new 303 stainless steel sealed cartridge outgoing click mechanism. It’s the same outgoing click system that has been installed for more than two years in their Super Series Quick Change reels.

Frames and spools are made from “cold-rolled” 6061-T650 aircraft-grade aluminum. “Cold rolling occurs with the metal below its recrystallization temperature (usually at room temperature), which increases the strength via strain hardening up to 20%. It also improves the surface finish and holds tighter tolerances,” said Swanson.

With the addition of the 9/10N, Abel now produces 17 models and sizes of reels in five series: Trout, Abel Creek, Super, Super Quick Change, Spey and Switch.

The Super Series 9/10N reel was tested extensively in the “battlefields” of the Atlantic, Pacific and Sea of Cortez in Baja California, Mexico on everything that would grab a fly – East Coast stripers and school tuna; Cape Hatteras albacore; permit and jacks in Belize; San Diego yellowtail; and south-of-the border roosterfish, skipjack, dorado (mahi-mahi) and yellowfin tuna.

In final tests before production, the models were run on a shop lathe at various drag settings to affirm the staying-power of the pure cork drag system.

Abel’s Super 9/10N reels are corrosion-resistant anodized at the factory using the tackle manufacturer’s proprietary methods, developed in the late-1980s and proven more than a quarter-century.

The Super 9/10N reel is in stock and ready to ship.
