ViewRanger Outdoors GPS App Goes Social

Outdoors GPS Navigation experts ViewRanger will add a social dimension to the feature set of their awarding-winning mobile app. Adventurists rely on ViewRanger to discover, create, navigate and share their outdoor explorations. The new social connectivity on the ViewRanger app enables the user to use their Smartphone or tablet to instantly share their routes and photos or view the adventures of their friends.

“Outdoor recreational activities are naturally social, we go mountain biking with friends or walking in a state park with family,” states Craig Wareham, ViewRanger CEO. “It makes sense for ViewRanger to build out social media capabilities – what began as a mapping, navigation and guidebook app, has evolved into an interest-based social network, an open digital content marketplace, and now an innovative platform for all outdoor participants.”

As a free add-on, ViewRanger users will be able to:

  • Find published routes and tracks of friends and expert authors from your smartphone
  • Add people to favorites to preview their latest adventures and new escapades
  • Easily download routes to your smartphone and go out and EXPLORE
  • View photos that friends have uploaded to their tracks

Adding the new social elements ultimately enables friends to connect virtually and share complete trip records including the mapped route taken and associated geotagged images which can be attached using popular tools like Twitter, Instagram and Flickr.

This new interface also offers unprecedented access to partnering brands. Guide book publishers and leading outdoor magazines, who make their trails content available via the app are also keen on this latest ViewRanger advancement. For them, it means that app users can also favorite and follow their brands and then easily find their latest published route content. Many leading outdoor magazines are already sharing route guide information through ViewRanger the same day the publication is shipped to subscribers.

The service will be live and available to all app users in time for the Summer Outdoor Retailer Trade Show. To use the new service simply log in to your ViewRanger account on your phone or tablet and head to the ViewRanger Store. Once there you can begin connecting with ViewRanger friends. According to Wareham, this is just the start of ViewRanger’s social capabilities with Facebook integration on the near horizon.

ViewRanger makes their solo debut at Summer OR, and will be stationed at Booth # 38077. To book an appointment or to RSVP for a daily demo (10:30-am and 2:30-pm) please contact Coral Darby at coral@darbycommunications.com.
