Legendary Bimini Big Game Club Hosts Family Fun Weekend August 16-19

Bring your fishing and diving gear. Bring the kids. Most importantly bring your sense of adventure to what is sure to become an annual end-of-summer family tradition—a weekend of good old fashioned family fun at the historic 51-room Big Game Club Resort & Marina in Bimini.

Hosted by the Big Game Club and Bluewater Movements, Inc. the family weekend—scheduled for August 16-19—will feature a host of activities, including:

  • A welcome reception with Rum Punch and appetizers
  • Treasure Hunt for the kids
  • Two-hour cruise on Bimini Blue—a glass bottom boat
  • A Best Catch and Grill Contest for the adults

Prizes, according to Diana Weber, Director of Marketing for the Big Game Club, will include a complimentary two-night stay in the Big Game Club’s Hemingway Suite, plus a boat slip in the marina.

“Of course we do offer many, many outdoor pursuits for those staying at the Big Game Club that weekend,” said Weber. “We can coordinate a myriad of activities, including deepwater and backcountry fishing charters, diving (both scuba and snorkeling), kayaking, paddleboarding and even kiteboarding for those looking for a little more adrenaline rush.”

The Sun Always Rises in Bimini, but today it shines down a new mix of visitors visiting this popular Bahamas out-island location. Certainly, the Bimini known to Ernest Hemingway, legendary angler and western novelist Zane Grey and his captain, Tommy Gifford, recluse billionaire Howard Hughes and retailing genius turned scientist/naturalist Michael Lerner is still alive and kicking. Fifty world-fishing records (and counting) can attest to that.

Today’s Bimini is more eco- and family-friendly, broadening the scope of activities—a new sense of fun and adventure.

Set in the midst of forever moving cobalt blue and turquoise green waters, Bimini and resorts such as the Big Game Club may only be a mere 50 miles due east of Miami but this island in the stream is light years distant from the hustle and bustle of South Florida.

According to the Big Game Club General Manager Michael Weber, more families are giving the New Bimini experience a try, especially those looking to soak up the Bahamian out-island culture and the diversity of on-the-water activities.

“While dad might be out on a backcountry bonefishing trip, mom and the kids can also be out on the water paddleboarding, kayaking or trying some kiteboarding,” said Weber. “Also we’re getting bookings from not only the immediate region, but have guests from throughout North America and Europe as well.”

Tourism in Bimini is on the rise. According to the Bahamas Out-Islands reports, guest visits through the end of 2011 were up nearly 13% from the previous year.

For example, The Bimini Big Game Club, according to Weber, is continuing to build its own tourism-focused base in 2012, promoting its various water sports activities along with a new push for corporate meetings, weddings and related family-oriented programs.

Weber said the recent completion of the Gulfstream Conference Center and Hemingway’s Rum Bar & Social Lounge will be heavily promoted as a convenient out-island venue for corporate, scientific and social group events.

Many visitors to the Bimini do choose to cross the Gulf Steam and can conveniently dock at the Big Game Club’s 75-slip marina, capable of accommodating boats up to 145 linear feet in length.

Bimini also has scheduled air access by several carriers including:

  • Silver Airways Corp, a new regional carrier launched with assets from the former Gulfstream International Airlines, (the code sharing partner of Continental/United) has acquired a new aircraft (34-seat Saab 340), which should be in service by February/March 2012. At present Silver has increased their frequency to two flights daily from Fort Lauderdale.
  • IBC Airways currently operates with Saab 30 passenger aircraft out of Fort Lauderdale International Airport with four times a week service.
  • Western Air services Bimini via Nassau with two flights daily.
  • Tropic Ocean Airways is the newest member to Bimini air travel options offering seaplane service to Bimini from Fort Lauderdale Sheltair. Direct-to-the-dock service at the Big Game Club is now available with the installation of a floating dock.

Another potential public transportation service is The Bahamas Express, a high-speed ferry service currently linking Fort Lauderdale and Freeport in the Bahamas. Future plans call for more regular service ports, including Bimini (service dates TBA).
