Inshore Fishing Heating Up Says Alabama Author

As the weather cools-down, speckled trout and redfish are moving inshore, and flounder are moving offshore. To learn where to find and how to catch all the inshore species like speckled trout, redfish, flounder, sheepshead and others, you might take a look at the new Kindle ebook, “Alabama’s Inshore Saltwater Fishing: A Year-Round Guide for Catching Over 15 Species of Fish” by John E. Phillips. This book features a year-round guide to catching the inshore game fish all year long. “In October, the trout will start moving toward the upper ends of the bays and the many coastal rivers that feed the bays, where they’ll spend the winter,” Phillips explains. “Live bait will be your best bet to catch these trout.”

At the same time the trout are moving inshore, the flounder that have been in the bays and marshes in shallow water will start traveling offshore, and you can catch them in the bays and the passes out into the open Gulf of Mexico. Fall is also the time that the big bull reds (redfish) that often weigh from 15- to 30-pounds each will begin swimming toward the beaches. “We’ll often see three or four schools of redfish that may have 100-or-more fish in each school, come to within casting distance of the Gulf State Park Pier in Gulf Shores, Ala.,” reports David Thornton, a guide on the pier and the banks of Alabama’s Gulf Coast.

Throughout the winter, many charter boats and private boats troll the front beaches of Alabama’s Gulf Coast. Captain Troy Frady of the charter boat “Distraction,” explains, “Catching and releasing three to five bull reds or even more in a day isn’t uncommon during the fall and winter.”
