Pheasant-Topia and Up Close Bear Hunting on This Week’s Episode of North American Hunter

Pheasant fanatics are gearing up for the big opener on October 20 in South Dakota. So it’s good timing the crew at North American Hunter took to the fields last fall for a little pheasant fun while host, Mark Kayser, went WAY up north to get his adrenaline pumping in a close encounter of the black bear kind on this week’s North American Hunter. Tune in to North American Hunter on NBC Sports Network Tuesdays at 10 a.m., Thursdays at 2:30 p.m., Fridays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 11:30 p.m. (ET). North American Hunter is part of the North American Hunting Club, the premier community for hunters and outdoor enthusiasts.

Bill Miller takes to South Dakota’s snowy corn fields in a late season ring-neck pheasant trip with old friend, Brian Kelvington of Federal Premium Ammunition. “South Dakota is truly a hunter’s paradise. And shooting, while that’s a lot of fun, is only a small part of the enjoyment,” said Miller during the show.

While the guys had a friendly competition happening, the birds were certainly proving challenging. “Even though this is a preserve, these birds are not put out just for you to take. They are out all season and before and are truly the equivalent of wild birds,” mentioned Miller. Viewers will have to tune in to see whose shooting was on target!

Meanwhile, host Mark Kayser traveled to northern Alberta where the black bears approach him in “handshaking distance.”

“I was ready to get a little more personal with these bears. I wanted to be on the ground face-to-face,” said Kayser during the show. And boy did he ever get close! One yearling bear got so curious as to what was happening with Kayser’s ground blind, that Kayser eventually had to bring out his shooting sticks and whap the young’un’ on the nose to stay out!

The following day, a boar and sow came to check out the ground blind area. The sow got too close and the boar had to come back to warn her off. But that was his demise – and Kayser’s arrow was true as he took down the giant black bear. “This was one of the most exciting hunts in a long time. To have something this big and that close, with no fear, it was amazing,” said Kayser.
