OutdoorHub 12.03.12
Taking advantage of Thanksgiving break, North American Hunter’s Mark Kayser brings his daughter with him on a whitetail prairie hunt in southeast Montana. She already bagged her 5×5 deer, now it’s his turn and she’s his wing man. Then, the crew heads to southern Alberta, Canada, where they road test new shotgun slugs as they hunt for whitetails. Tune in to North American Hunter on NBC Sports Network Tuesdays at 10 a.m., Thursdays at 2:30 p.m., Fridays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 11:30 p.m. (ET). Since Mark’s daughter, Katelyn, already tagged her deer, she was rattling and grunting as his partner to see the family complete another successful whitetail hunt. And she’s pretty good at her job as they immediately see big bucks coming into rifle range. “I thought long and hard about taking this buck that came in real close. I had my daughter at my side and the sun at our backs. But I took a deep breath and a step back as I didn’t want to rush the hunt,” said Kayser.
Kayser let that one go, but will he get a second chance while at this beautiful Montana ranch?
Meanwhile, the NAH crew heads up to southern Alberta for a whitetail slug gun hunt. There, they had to use classic spot-and-stalk techniques to find their deer. The deer they found, but they didn’t expect the herd of elk to come in and disperse the whitetails so quickly! Now they are back to glassing and stalking to find the spooked deer’s favorite hiding spot.
Also in this week’s episode, tune in for Kayser and North American Hunter Sr. Editor, Luke Hartle, discuss a difficult shot in “You Call the Shots.” A massive buck was high-tailing it across a corn field under Kayser’s watch, but he didn’t take the shot. Hartle argues that since it was a linear run, and he was a larger buck, therefore moving slower, he could have got the shot off well. What would you do?
