NY Elevator Constructor Battles Asian Carp on Brotherhood Outdoors

Nashville, TN—The Union Sportsmen’s Alliance’s award-winning hunting and fishing TV show, Brotherhood Outdoors, will feature an action-packed Asian carp bowfishing adventure with Corfu, NY native and union elevator constructor Bill Schaber at 11 a.m. ET on Sunday, January 13 on Sportsman Channel.
Vice President of IUEC Local 14, Schaber will join co-hosts Daniel Lee Martin and Julie McQueen in Illinois to help combat the growing population of invasive Asian carp—archery style. Faced for the first time with the challenge of flying fish, he’ll have the opportunity to combine his longtime love of angling and bow hunting while battling one of the Midwest’s most invasive species.
A former competitive shooter and Cub Scout Master, Schaber has always been inspired by a family legacy of outdoorsmen. Each summer he hosts the Marty Schaber Memorial Kids Fishing Derby on family land for dozens of children and teens. Named for his father, the derby is now in its fourteenth year and helps expose future generations to the Schaber family’s love of the great outdoors.
“Coming from a long line of anglers, my hope is that viewers get an understanding of just how invasive this species is,” said Schaber. “Before the show, I’d never been west of the Mississippi River. I learned quickly that regardless of where you live, it’s up to us—everyday sportsmen and women—to make sure something is to done to prevent Asian carp from spreading across America.”
Working intimately with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Brotherhood Outdoors crew was ecstatic to capture not only an exhilarating bowfishing trip but to shed a national spotlight on the threat posed by non-native Asian carp.
“Over the past two and a half years, the Illinois DNR has been able to work with the community to remove more than one million pounds of bighead and silver Asian carp from their rivers,” said Brotherhood Outdoors Co-host Daniel Lee Martin. “Our goal with this episode is to make this growing issue a part of sportsmen’s everyday dialogue.”
