High-altitude hunting in Montana is never a sure bet, but Steven Rinella isn’t the kind of guy to turn down a challenge. Sportsman Channel, the leader in Outdoor TV for the American Sportsman, is rolling out a special 5-part Montana series of MeatEater with Steven Rinella beginning with a new episode premiering on Sunday, April 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. All April is a month full of big adventure in “Big Sky Country” for Rinella and guests, including a first time mule deer hunt for TV personality, Joe Rogan, on April 28 and May 5 at 9 pm ET/PT.
In this Sunday’s episode, Rinella enlists the assistance of his good friend and bird-hunting enthusiast, Ronny Boehme, on a rigorous adventure in southwest Montana for “dusky” grouse. Locating and harvesting these birds can be extremely difficult, but it was not long after reaching the mountaintops that Boehme takes his first “dusky” with a shotgun and then connects with a few more for good measure.
The hiking eventually takes its toll on both the men and dogs, and after harvesting only one additional grouse, it is time call it a day and cook up the spoils of the hunt. Boehme has a good deal of bird-cooking experience, and prepares jalapeño grouse and cream cheese poppers as an appetizer. Not to be outdone in the culinary department, Rinella decides to do a braised grouse and cream sauce over fettuccine. Needless to say, both meals capped off two very fruitful days in the woods.
“Hunting for dusky grouse has something I have always wanted to do,” said Steven Rinella, host of MeatEater and recent James Beard Award Finalist. “And Ronnie is one of the best bird hunters I know. It was an honor to have him on this trip. After all, he traveled halfway across country for a hunt that honesty has less than a fifty percent chance of success at best. But good grouse numbers or not, it is always a treat to share the field with such a great friend and fellow hunter.”
