This Week on North American Fisherman-TV: Surprises in South Dakota
OutdoorHub 04.30.13
This week on North American Fisherman-TV, host Capt. Eric Haataja heads to the glacial lakes of South Dakota – specifically the Roy Lakes region – with guest Nate Kaminski for a smorgasbord of fish species on just one lake. The pair catches everything from crappies to smallies to largemouth bass and pike. Later in the show, we’ll learn about the latest inventions to prevent invasive species from attacking our waters, followed by the line-to-line championship on Knot Wars Lite. Enjoy more of the same great action by visiting the North American Fisherman YouTube channel.
This is Capt. Haajaja’s first time fishing in South Dakota, which is not immediately known for its amazing fishing action, but immediately surprises the anglers with its abundant species. “The first thing I do when on an unfamiliar lake is check to see what’s up shallow. Are the bass spawning? Are they on the rocks? In the wood? If I see them up shallow, they’ll be like that all over the lake,” said Capt. Haataja.
The prairies of South Dakota don’t conjure up images of fishing, but the outcropping of glacial potholes left by the moving glaciers means a good variety of fishing. “You get everything from shallow water bays, deep water woods and everything else you can imagine in these glacial lakes,” said Capt. Haataja.
“The crappies were unbelievable. Awesome doesn’t even describe it,” said guest Nate Kaminski. “You see those giant 14 inchers; you can’t put a price on it.”
This week’s Field Test powered by StuffStuff takes a look at the Big Catch H1 Pliers and Berkley Nanofil Line. Lastly, “Silent Invaders” discusses a new hitchhiker, the round goby. Since they are not native to our waters, they are causing major damage to the ecosystem.
