This Week on The Revolution: Bear Week
OutdoorHub 05.16.13
With razor sharp claws, forty-two teeth and large jaw muscles that are capable of crushing bones, and not to mention a top running speed of 40 miles per hour you better make every shot count when hunting spring bear! On this week’s Revolution, Jim and Trav will conquer bear attacks and survival techniques, bear hunting tips, the expansion of grizzlies and much, much more!
The Growing Grizzly Population – Rick Mace
Grizzly populations are bursting at the seams and require more management than ever. Rick Mace with the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks joins Jim and Trav this week to talk about the expansion of the grizzly bear population and how some are moving out of the crowded mountains and onto flat land. He also talks about management and how removing grizzlies from the endangered species list and handing over management of populations to the state in the near future can be an effective way to manage the species.
Be Bear Aware – Chuck Bartlebaugh
Almost all human to bear encounters and conflict come as a result of the human not respecting or not recognizing the space that should be given to wild animals in their own habitat. Chuck Bartlebaugh with the Center for Wildlife Information and the Be Bear Aware campaign is handing out some important info this week on how to reduce your chances of surprise encounters with bears, how to avoid conflict and how to protect yourself should you find yourself at the mercy of an angry bruin.
Karelian Bear Dogs – Mike Cenci
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife deals with bears on a regular basis and in an effort to reduce conflict between bears and humans in a non-lethal way they use Karelian Bear Dogs as a means of wildlife control. Tune in to hear from DWFW’s Mike Cenci about how these specialized dogs help control bears.
Larry Weishuhn – Spring Black Bear Hunting
Outdoor legend Larry Weishuhn joins Jim and Trav to discuss spring black bear hunting. He’ll talk about the best part of the season to hunt, where to look for bears and their behaviors. He’ll also detail some tips for calling in bears using predator calls like a fawn or calf distress call.
