Utah DNR Invites You to Hone Your Shooting Skills with the USA Shooting Team

Three team members will spend a weekend in Salt Lake City

Beginning and expert marksmen and women alike will have the chance to meet and learn from USA Shooting Team members at a “Breaking Clays” event in Salt Lake City.

Join the team members and volunteer instructors on Aug. 24 and 25 for two days of shooting instruction and practice. The Division of Wildlife Resources will host the event at its Lee Kay Public Shooting Range, 6000 W. 2100 S.

To participate, you must preregister. The event on Aug. 24 is free.

Aug. 24 – Free Youth Outdoor Experience

The events on Aug. 24 are geared toward elementary school- to high school-aged youth. USA Shooting Team members Brian Burrows, Amber English and Sean McLelland will be on site to get youth excited about the outdoors. With the help of volunteer instructors, participants can practice shooting on the archery, shotgun and .22 rifle ranges. They’ll also learn about firearm safety and wildlife habitat conservation.

The event is free. Firearms, ammunition and targets will be provided. Activities run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you’d like to participate, send an email to Jon Zinnel at jonz@muledeer.org or call 1-800-973-3940.

Aug. 25 – Breaking Clays Event

On Aug. 25, Burrows, English and McLelland will host Trap and Skeet workshops. These three-hour sessions are open to shooters of all ages and abilities. The clinics cost $150, and you must bring your own ammunition (about one case of shells) and pay, after the event, for the number of clay targets you shot at (roughly 200 targets).

Every instructor will work with five students during each session. The first session begins at 9 a.m.

To register for the paid shooting clinics, visit usayess.org or email McLelland at sean@usayess.org.

Team members

McLelland led his Lindenwood University skeet team to three consecutive ACUI National Shotgun Championships. Burrows is a two-time USA National Champion, and a three-time Jr. Olympic Medalist. English is the 2013 US National Women’s Skeet champion. She hopes to compete in the 2016 Olympic Games.
