Kansas Anglers Dominate the Waters of Nebraska’s Calamus Reservoir at 2013 Cabela’s King Kat Tournament

This past Saturday August 24th, 2013 the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail hit the waters of the Calamus Reservoir at Burwell, Nebraska. In the event over 70 of the top anglers from 6 different states were competing not only for cash and prizes, but the opportunity to qualify for the 2013 Cabela’s King Kat Classic. This year’s Cabela’s King Kat Classic will be held September 26-28, 2013 on Kentucky Lake at Camden, Tennessee. Be sure to check out our new website at: www.kingkatusa.com. Results for the Top 5 Teams

Taking first place was the team of Darrin Meseke of Lawrence, Kansas and Arlan Miller of McFarland, Kansas with a weight of 128.4 pounds and earning $3,000.00 to make the trip from Kansas worthwhile. Darrin and Arlan also captured big fish of the event with a 33.45 pound cat which earned the team an additional $600.The team were drifting in 25 feet of water over a channel one mile north of the no wake buoys in the center of the lake using cut shad to catch 30 fish for day.

In second place was the team of Kevin Parks of Leroy, Kansas and Terry Fischer of Waverly, Kansas with a weight of 76.75 pounds and earning $1,100.00. Kevin and Terry were fishing just north of the of the no wake buoy line in the center of the lake on the edge of a creek using cut shad by drifting to catch20 fish for the day.

Third place went to the team  Chris Silva of Paxico, Kansas and Joe Silva of Alma, Kansas weighing in 73.15 pounds and earning $400.00 Chris and Joe were drifting over 25 feet of water in much of the same area that the top 2 teams were in using cut shad and blood bait to catch 30 fish for the day.

David Studebaker of Burlingame, Kansas and Rich Witt of Junction City, Kansas  took fourth place with a weight of 66.15 pounds and earning $300.00. David and Rich were fishing the west end of the lake drifting cut shad in 30 feet of water to catch 35 fish for the day.

Fifth place went to Eddie Van Dorn of Des Moines, Iowa and Travis Tullis of Corning, Iowa weighing in 62.95 pounds and earning $200.00. Eddie and Travis drifted the west end of the lake in 20-24 feet of water using chubs and Whisker Seeker rigs to catch 12 fish for the day.

“A special thanks to Stacey and staff with Burwell Tourism for hosting the event and the History Channel for their film work at the event”, said Cabela’s King Kat CEO Darrell Van Vactor. “The weather was hot with temperatures in the high 90’s and winds 30-35 mph all day. On Saturday morning the King Kat Kids Fishing Rodeo had  44 kids at the Burwell City Park Pond – caught a lot of good fish and had a great time.”  “Also a special thanks to the History Channel crew for a great job covering the weigh in. The teams fought high winds all day and really did a good job in adverse conditions, we saw some great channel cat come in today”, said Van Vactor.
