Mississippi DWFP Offering Dove Hunting Opportunity in Rankin County

As part of its Private Lands Dove Field Program, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) has prepared a dove field in Rankin County and is offering a limited number of hunting permits for purchase.  The 63-acre browntop millet field is located in the Monterey community.  The millet will be cut and baled for hay prior to opening day.

“Dove hunting is very popular; however, the MDWFP has recognized that having access to properly prepared, family friendly dove fields can be difficult for people to find,” states Scott Baker, MDWFP Dove Field Program Leader.  Baker says, “The MDWFP has partnered with a local farmer to make this field available for hunters.  Our goal is to have a safe field that offers good hunting for the entire family to enjoy.”

Hunting is by permit only for persons 16 years of age and older.  Hunters who purchase permits will be granted access to the field on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday afternoons during the first two dove seasons (September 2 – 22 and October 12 – November 4).  Up to two youth hunters 15 years of age or younger can hunt with each permitted adult hunter 21 years of age or older at no additional cost.  Permits are $100 each, and they are limited.  Permit fees are used to pay for field preparation.  To purchase a permit or for more information on the Rankin County dove field, including an aerial photo of the field and complete hunting regulations, please visit www.mdwfp.com/dove or contact Scott Baker at (601) 432-2229.

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP), formerly known as the Mississippi Game & Fish Commission, is an agency of the government of the U.S. state ofMississippi responsible for programs protecting Mississippi fish and wildlife resources and their habitats, as well as administering all state parks; it has its headquarters in Jackson. The agency issues hunting and fishing licenses, advises on habitat protection, and sponsors public education programs. It is also responsible for enforcement of Mississippi's fish and game laws. It is separate from the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, which is the governing body for the state's natural salt-water resources and law enforcement thereof (i.e. Gulf of Mexico, ocean-going vessels, etc.).
