Indiana DNR Program Will Teach Squirrel Hunting, Jan. 4

Registration is open for a free DNR program that will teach participants how to hunt squirrels in Indiana.

“Hunt, Fish, Eat: Squirrels” is part of the ongoing “Hunt, Fish, Eat” program offered through the DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife that teaches Hoosiers self-reliance.

The program is Jan. 4 from noon to 4 p.m. at DNR Fire Headquarters in Morgan-Monroe State Forest, outside Martinsville.

The program will focus on laws and regulations, firearms and safety, locating a hunting spot, field dressing your harvest, and handling and preparing your squirrel for the table. The session will include an opportunity to sample squirrel recipes and examine hunting gear and resources.

Participants must be new hunters, or new to small game hunting. All equipment is provided. Space is limited, so hunters are encouraged to register early.

The program is offered with sponsorship and volunteer support from Squirrels Unlimited.

To register or receive more information, call the DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife at (317) 234-8440 or email dfwed@dnr.IN.gov.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is the agency of the U.S. state of Indiana charged with maintaining natural areas such as state parks, state forests, recreation areas, etc. There are many divisions within the DNR and each has a specific role. The DNR is not only responsible for maintaining resource areas but also manages Indiana's fish and wildlife, reclaims coal mine ground, manages forested areas, aids in the management of wildlife on private lands, enforces Indiana's conservation laws, and many other duties not named here. According to the department's website, their mission is "to protect, enhance, preserve, and wisely use natural, cultural, and recreational resources for the benefit of Indiana's citizens through professional leadership, management, and education."
