Results for the 2014 Cabela’s King Kat Tournament on Lake Tawakoni

This past Saturday March 1, 2014 as a crowd of 635 fans watched the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail hit the waters of Lake Tawakoni at West Tawakoni, Texas. It was an amazing event where the Rippin Lips Pro-Staff Team of Cook and Gerloff of Missouri led the field by over 35 pounds over the second place team to take first place.

In the event over 100 of the top anglers from 8 different states were competing not only for the $8,235.00 in  cash and prizes, but the opportunity to qualify for the 2014 Cabela’s King Kat East and West Championship. This year’s West Championship will be held September 19 & 20, 2014 on the Mississippi and Rock Rivers at Quad Cities, Iowa. The East Championship will be held October 3 & 4, 2014 on Lake Wateree at Camden, South Carolina. Be sure to check out our website at: www.kingkatusa.com. Results for the Top 5 Teams

Taking first place was the Rippin Lips Pro-Staff Team of Justin Cook of New Franklin, Missouri and Roger Gerloff of Jefferson City, Missouri with 217.15 pounds and earning $3,300.00. Justin and Roger were fishing the north end of the lake targeting flats and windblown points in 15 feet of water using smaller cut shad. The theory was that the fish would hit the smaller bait due to the cold front hitting earlier in the week and panning out to help the team catch 20 fish for the day.

In second place was Ray Austin of Thorndale, Texas and Robert Aquilera of Floresville, Texas weighing in 180.40 pounds and earning $1,600.00. Ray and Robert were setting on flats in 8 feet of water on the north end using large whole shad to catch 10 fish for the day.

Third place went to the Sallisaw, Oklahoma team of Jeff Haas and Pat Kennedy with 147.5 pounds and earning $800.00. Jeff and Pat were fishing the banks in 6 feet of water on the north end using whole shad to catch 15 fish for the day.

The Olathe, Kansas team of Robert Stanley and Dustin Sawyer took fourth place with a weight of 143.75 pounds and earning $600.00. Robert and Dustin were drifting across the middle of the lake in 10 feet of water using cut shad to catch 20 fish for the day.

Fifth place went to Albert Hirzel of Guthrie, Oklahoma and Joey Tennill of Edmond, Oklahoma weighing in 140.55 pounds and earning $400.00. Albert and Joey were targeting creek channels on the north side in anywhere from 6-20 feet of water using cut shad and catching 30 fish for the day. The team said they caught a lot of small fish, but still managed to get the big ones they needed.

Taking big fish of the event was the team of Merlyn Johnson of Walton, Kansas and Derrick Crozier of Olathe, Kansas with a 73.25 pound fish earning the team $1,035.00.

“We wish to give a special thanks to West Tawakoni officials including Mayor Calvin Travers , West Tawakoni EDC board, Lamont Jenkins and his staff with the West Tawakoni Parks Dept., Rockwall Marine for Alumacraft boat displays, Allen, TX Cabela’s General Manager Matt Malone and Marketing  Manager Elise Zelanko were there to welcome the anglers and spectators.
