Pheasants Forever and Renowned Conservationist Mahoney Rally for Conservation

Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever announce conservation advocate Shane Mahoney will be a featured partner in the organization’s efforts to conserve upland habitat. Mahoney will be speaker at national Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever events, as well as a contributor to the nonprofit’s online efforts and its signature publications, the Pheasants Forever Journal and Quail Forever Journal.

Mahoney is a leading authority on North American conservation history and policy, gifted orator who is a passionate spokesperson for hunting and angling, and has been at the forefront of debates on issues of sustainable use of wildlife resources within both the United States and Canada. The partnership announcement was made during a “Rally for Conservation” at Pheasants Forever’s recent National Pheasant Fest & Quail Classic. “I am honored to join the Pheasants Forever team in the fight for upland habitat and wildlife conservation. It is my hope and goal that our journey together will bring passionate outdoors people, hunters and non-hunters alike, indeed all concerned Americans together to create a rally for conservation,” says Mahoney, a Pheasants Forever Life Member. “No social movement is of greater consequence to the future of the United States and Canada or for the world at large. The strength of many committed individuals can create a citizens’ movement that will help us protect the things we hold dear including those wild creatures, like pheasants and quail, which many of us may not fully appreciate until they are gone. It is our responsibility to protect the habitats of these creatures so they can thrive forever. Please join with me and with Pheasants Forever as we rally to protect North America’s remaining grasslands.”

“Mahoney’s unique ability to effectively frame important conservation issues and clearly communicate solutions will inspire Pheasants Forever’s base to advance the North American Conservation Model for generations to come,” explains Howard K. Vincent, Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s President and CEO.

A research biologist with extensive experience in large mammal ecology and predator-prey relationships, Mahoney currently writes for several popular magazines, including Sports Afield. He’s hosted and narrated multiple television series, including The World of Sports Afield and Boone and Crockett Country. He’s also produced and hosted independent films and worked on television specials with Canadian Geographic and the British Broadcasting Corporation.

Pheasants Forever launched Quail Forever in August of 2005 to address the continuing loss of habitat suitable for quail and the subsequent quail population decline. Bobwhite population losses over the last 25 years range from 60 to 90 percent across the country. The reason for the quail population plunge is simple - massive losses of habitat suitable for quail. There are five major factors leading to the losses of quail habitat; intensified farming and forestry practices, succession of grassland ecosystems to forests, overwhelming presence of exotic grasses like fescue that choke out wildlife, and urban sprawl.
