OutdoorHub 03.24.14
The GUNS Surplus 2014 Special Edition is a beast of an issue, jam-packed with 32 articles that focus on vintage and replica guns and gear. This issue highlights the best of military artillery, delving into fascinating history and tracking the evolution of some of the world’s most famous surplus guns. The cover story for this Special Edition features the PPSh-41 submachine gun. Mike “Duke” Venturino details the development and sheer power of this iconic Soviet wartime firearm.
“In appearance, the PPSh-41 is sort of a hybrid of submachine guns. It has a wooden buttstock, but about halfway down, its length construction turns to steel. Its ejection is so strong you cannot see the empty cases leaving the ejection port,” explains Venturino. “The PPSh-41’s rate of fire was so fast that 10 rounds had gone downrange in under half a second. I actually stood there in awe of the thing!”
In “Beretta Goes West,” John Taffin examines the results of the merge of Beretta and Uberti, describing the innovative additions to the company’s newest productions.
“The Colt Single-Action Army-styled Stampede, complete with a very smooth action, mated up with a transfer safety and a beautiful blue/case-colored finish, brings everything together in one package,” describes Taffin. “The Stampede .45 proved to be an excellent shooting sixgun with both my handload of a 255-grain bullet over 8 grains of Unique and Buffalo Bore’s 255 SWC, both placing five rounds right at 1″ with muzzle velocities of 925 fps and 1,030 fps respectively.”
The 2014 GUNS Surplus Special Edition also features John Sheehan’s look at the Model 1903 Springfield in WWI, Holt Bodinson’s examination of Spain’s Astra 400, Hamilton Bowen’s advice on sighting in guns yourself and Clint Smith’s exploration of the M40 Scout Sniper, plus over 25 other articles filled with historical facts, guns stats and firsthand accounts of writers’ personal experiences with some of their favorite surplus guns.
