Golden Pass LNG recently pledged $130,000 in support of Ducks Unlimited’s conservation programs along the Texas Gulf Coast. This gift further demonstrates the company’s commitment to conserving coastal wetlands already evidenced in its partnership on several restoration projects.

“Golden Pass has been a strong conservation partner for several years,” said Todd Merendino, Ducks Unlimited (DU) manager of conservation programs in Texas. “They have already worked with us on a shoreline protection project and a beneficial use of dredged material project, both of which enhanced critical wetland areas on the Texas coast.”

In partnership with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and DU, Golden Pass provided more than 3.2 million cubic yards of dredge material for use on projects at the Salt Bayou Unit of the J.D. Murphree Wildlife Management Area. DU managed the placement of the material, which raised marsh elevations to desirable levels and will continue to encourage growth of important plants on more than 2,200 acres.

The shoreline protection project constructed approximately three miles of rock breakwater along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway to protect more than 900 acres of the Murphree WMA managed wetlands from wave erosion and saltwater intrusion.

“This contribution to wetland conservation will help protect critical winter habitat for continental waterfowl populations, as well as resident mottled ducks and other wetland dependent wildlife,” said Dr. Michael Reszutek, TPWD wetlands and waterfowl specialist. “TPWD appreciates the commitment of Golden Pass to conserving our natural resources for current and future generations to enjoy,”

TPWD manages the area for waterfowl, fisheries, other wildlife and public hunting, but these coastal marshes also provide critical storm surge protection for surrounding communities.

“At Golden Pass, two of our core values are ensuring the safety of our people and the surrounding communities and protecting the environment,” said Eric Pletcher, president of Golden Pass LNG. “These values are our license to operate in the community. We are committed to enhancing the environment through continued support of Ducks Unlimited and its Texas Gulf Coast conservation programs. These types of partnerships and programs help sustain wetland ecosystems that benefit local residents, businesses and our own employees.”

Golden Pass LNG recognizes the environment’s special role in southeast Texas. The company employs the best industry practices and technology, and operates in compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements to run an environmentally responsible LNG terminal.
