Crappie USA Tournament Results for Green River Lake at Columbia, Kentucky

This past Saturday April 26th, Crappie USA held a qualifying event on Green River Lake at Columbia, Kentucky. Over 125 anglers from 7 different states were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic. This year’s classic will be held October 16th-18th on Lake Cumberland at Somerset, Kentucky.
Semi-Pro Division Results
Taking first place was the team of Mark Morris of Campbellsburg, Kentucky and Keith Morris of New Castle, Kentucky with a weight of 6.73 pounds and earning $1,600.00 along with the Driftmaster bonus. Mark and Keith were longline trolling early in the Holmes Bend Marina area using wildcat colored Southern Pro Hot Grubs. Later in the day the team trolled chrome colored crank baits to catch over 150 fish for the day.
Second place went to the team of David Jones of Columbia, Kentucky and Richard Williams of Paris, Tennessee with a weight of 6.4 pounds and earning $900.00. David and Richard were spider rigging around the dam using Southern Pro Baby Bass tipped with nibbles to catch over 300 fish for the day.
In third place was the team of John and Matthew Feagin of Mayfield, Kentucky with 6.2 pounds and earning $600.00. John and Matthew were fishing in Casey Creek using Kentucky Lake Killer Red colored Southern Pro jigs to catch over 175 fish for the day. Most of the fish were in the completion stage of the spawn.
The Murray, Kentucky team of Alan Carter and Tony Sheppard took fourth place in the Semi-Pro Division with a weight of 6.16 pounds and earning $450.00. Alan and Tony were fishing in Robinson Creek area 7-10 feet deep using blue/chartreuse Little Rascal jigs and crank baits to catch around 200 fish for the day.
Fifth place went to the team of Michael Bowland of Mayfield, Kentucky and Aaron Bowland of Paducah, Kentucky with a weight of 6.07 pounds and earning $275.00. The team also received an additional $250.00 for winning the Ranger Cup Award in the semi-pro division. Michael and Aaron were fishing the south end of the lake near Snake Creek, spider rigging purple/chartreuse Southern Pro “Pro Series” jigs in 12 feet of water to catch over 100 fish for the day of which 75 were keeper fish over 9 inches long.
Amateur Division Results
First place in the amateur division went to the Brodhead, Kentucky team of Ronnie Brown and Dennis Bray with a weight of 6.67 pounds and earning $1,100.00. The team also earned $200.00 for second biggest fish of the event. Ronnie and Dennis were fishing the Ridge and Langham area in 12 feet of water early then moved shallow and found lots of spawned out fish using minnows to catch over 200 fish for the day.
Second place went to the Wingo, Kentucky team of DeWayne and Reed McCord with 6.54 pounds and earning $650.00. DeWayne and Reed were fishing the Holmes Bend area in 12 feet of water pulling purple and chartreuse crank baits to catch over 150 fish for the day.
Taking third place was the team of Michael Wise of Payneville, Kentucky and Matthew Hall of Ekron, Kentucky weighing in 6.11 pounds and earning $400.00. Michael and Matthew were fishing the Emerald Island area in 12-15 feet of water working brush piles and other manmade cover using live bait to catch over 60 fish for the day.
The Springfield, Kentucky team of Lyn and Nathan Cochran took fourth place with 5.85 pounds and earned $300.00. The Cochran team fished the Holmes Bend area in 12-14 feet of water spider rigging dark colored jigs.
Fifth place went to the Hustonville, Kentucky team of Larry Salyers and Todd Smith weighing in 5.58 pounds and earning $225.00. Larry and Todd were spider rigging in the area around the dam using handmade chartreuse colored jigs to catch over 60 fish for the day.
Taking big fish of the event was RJ Erhard of Finchville, Kentucky and Dennis Erhard of Louisville, Kentucky with a 1.84 pound crappie and earning $500.00.

Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo
In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$1,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic.
Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $322,000.00 to the “Crappie Kids” Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA “Kids Fishing Rodeos”.
A special thanks to Sue Stivers and her staff with Columbia – Adair County Tourism for hosting the event and Holmes Bend Marina for hosting the Crappie Kids Rodeo and the weigh in. Nearly all teams weighed in fish at Green River Lake and most teams had a limit. The lake is truly a crappie manufacturing plant combine that to the fact that the scenic beauty around the lake is second to none in the country it really makes Green River Lake a great destination for the angler.
