Fox Team Surpasses Competition by Nearly Thirty-five Pounds at Cabela’s King Kat Tournament at the Ohio River

This past Saturday May 3, 2014 the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail hit the waters of the Ohio River at Gallipolis, Ohio. In the event 100 top anglers from 8 different states were competing not only for the $8,200.00  in  cash and prizes, but the opportunity to qualify for the 2014 Cabela’s King Kat East and West Championship. This year’s West Championship will be held September 19 & 20, 2014 on the Mississippi and Rock Rivers at Quad Cities, Iowa. The East Championship will be held October 3 & 4, 2014 on Lake Wateree at Camden, South Carolina. Be sure to check out our website at: www.kingkatusa.com. Results for the Top 5 Teams

Taking first place was the McArthur, Ohio team of James and Janet Fox weighing in 114.79 pounds and earning $3,300.00. James and Janet were fishing 10-15 miles up the Kanawha River anchored up where the water was clearer in 20-25 feet of water using skipjack to catch 19 fish for the day. The Fox team wish to thank their sponsor Rippin Lips.

In second place was the team of Jeff Corley of Lancaster, Ohio and Brandon Kopis of Breman, Ohio weighing in 80.82 pounds and earning $1,600.00. Jeff and Brandon were fishing up the Kanawha River anchored up in 30-35 feet of water using cut shad to land 7 fish for the day with a 32.20 pound kicker fish. Each team is allowed to weigh in their top 5 fish at the end of the day.

Third place went to the team of Vic Sheppard of Mount Orab, Ohio and Chris DeBow of Madeira, Ohio weighing in 59.18 pounds and earning $800.00. Vic and Chris were up the Kanawha some 6 miles anchored up in 30 feet of water to catch a total of 7 fish for the day.

Chris Sounders and Justin Horner of Oakhill, Ohio took fourth place with a weight of 57.5 pounds and earning $600.00. Chris and Justin like the others were fishing up the Kanawha in around 25 feet of water using skipjack and creek chubs to land a total of 10 fish for the day.

Fifth place went to Jeremy Jeffers of Winfield, West Virginia and Troy Jarrell of Charlestown, West Virginia weighing in  51.42 pounds and earning $400.00. Jeremy and Troy were up the Kanawha as well in 40 feet of water on a ledge using skipjack for bait.

Taking big fish of the event was the team of Jackie Call and Christina Morton of Winfield, West Virginia with a 38.90 pound catfish and earning a cool $1,000.00. The team was on a big fish pattern with this being the only fish they caught all day, but the one that counts.

Cabela’s King Kat Free Kids Fishing Rodeo

In conjunction with the tournament Cabela’s King Kat held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with several local children attending the event at the Bob Evans Farm. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$1,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic this fall.

Cabela’s King Kat, Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $322,000.00 to the “Outdoor Kids” Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Cabela’s King Kat, “Kids Fishing Rodeos”.
