Crappie USA 2014 Tournament Results for Ohio’s Grand Lake St. Mary’s

This past Saturday May 31st Crappie USA held a qualifying event on Ohio’s Grand Lake St. Mary’s at Celina, Ohio. Anglers from 8 different states were competing for not only cash and prizes, but a chance to advance to the prestigious Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic. This year’s classic will be held October 16th-18th on Lake Cumberland at Somerset, Kentucky.

Semi-Pro Division Results

Taking first place was the Celina, Ohio team of Jim and Doug Freeman weighing in 6.18 pounds and earning $1,000.00. Jim and Doug fished the south side in 3 to 4 feet of water catching suspended fish at 1 foot deep using jig and cork to catch 50 to 60 fish for the day and also won the Talon Bonus of $500.00.

Second place went to the team of Charles Hildreth of Gaston, Ohio and Paul Hildreth of Muncie, Indiana with a weight of 6.13 and earning $600.00. Charles and Paul was spider rigging on south side of the lake using Southern Pro pink and pearl jigs in 6 feet of water catching 60 to 70 suspended fish at 3 feet deep. The team also won the Ranger Cup bonus of $250.00.

In third place was the Jake Hengstler of Botkins, Ohio and Jason Koesters of New Bremen, Ohio weighing in 6.08 pounds and earning $400.00.

Amateur Division Results

First place in the amateur division went to the Celina, Ohio team of Brian Bollenbacher and Kerry August weighing in 6.14 pounds and earning $600.00. Brian and Kerry fished the south side of lake in 4 to 8 feet of water using Southern Pro tubes black/chartreuse single pole cork and jig to catch 50 to 60 fish during the day.

Second place went to the St. Mary’s team of Mike Bell and Rich Goodwin with a weight of 5.7 pounds and earning $400.00. Mike and Rich also fished the south side of lake in a foot of water single pole cork and jig to catch 30 fish for the day.

Taking third place was the team of Frank Richey of Lima, Ohio and Steven Richey of Anna, Ohio weighing in 5.65 pounds and earning $200.00. Frank and Steven fished the south side of lake with jig and cork in 5 to 6 feet of water catching their suspended fish at 18 inches and caught 25 to 30 fish.

Big Fish went to the 3 person team of Michael Walters/ Steve Ferguson/Sebastian Vore weighing .95 pounds and earning $199.50. The fish was caught by Mike Walters grandson Sebastian Vore.

Crappie USA Free Kids Fishing Rodeo

In conjunction with the tournament Crappie USA held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with  several local children attending the event.  All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$1,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic.

Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $322,000.00 to the “Crappie Kids” Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Crappie USA “Kids Fishing Rodeos”.

“A big Thanks to Sharon, Ron and Randy at The Fraternal Order of Eagles for helping to bring the Tournament back to Grand Lake St. Mary’s and for hosting the seminar, kids rodeo and the weigh in.  Great facility and great people to work with”, said Tournament Director  Larry Stephens.

Stats for the Tournament:

Weather- The morning was sunny, light winds and 66 degrees. Weigh in time brought sunny skies and 87 degrees.

Water- Stained and 75 degrees.
