John Kruse, the host and producer of Northwestern Outdoors Radio, received three “Excellence in Craft” awards during the Outdoor Writer’s Association of America annual conference held over Memorial Day weekend in McAllen, Texas.
Kruse received a first place award in the radio broadcast category for fishing with an interview he did with guide Bruce Warren in September about fishing the Columbia River Gorge for Chinook and coho salmon.
In the hunting category Northwestern Outdoors Radio received a second place award for a broadcast recorded during a field hunt for geese with guide Levi Meseberg in a field of plowed corn in Eastern Washington.
An additional second place award was received by Kruse for a humorous conservation themed interview he conducted with Janie Fink with Northwest Birds of Prey out of Northern Idaho highlighting everything the radio show host didn’t know about great horned owls.
This is only the second year Northwestern Outdoors Radio entered this national competition featuring outdoor radio shows and podcasts from all over the United States. Asked about the strong finish in three distinct categories, John Kruse replied, “We must be doing something right, and it’s wonderful to get feedback saying so from not only our listeners, but also from the judges who are our peers in the outdoors media industry”.
