Six OWAA Contest Winners Judged ‘Best of the Best’

The OWAA President’s Choice Awards honor the best of the best work from a variety of media recognized in the association’s 2014 Excellence in Craft Contests. Past President Bill Graham judged first-place winners from the 2014 EIC Contests.
This year’s President’s Choice Award winners are:
- Magazine/E-zine: Matt Soberg, of Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, for “A huckleberry grouse tale,” published in the May 2013 issue of the Ruffed Grouse Society magazine. Soberg’s article placed first in the Outdoor Fun and Adventure Category of the Magazine/E-zine Contest.
- Newspaper/News Website: Jackson Landers, of Scottsville, Virginia, for “Dancing with black widow spiders,” published Sept. 16, 2013, in the The New York Times. Landers’ article placed first in the Outdoor Fun and Adventure Category of the Newspaper/News Website Contest.
- Blog: Steve Zakur, of Sandy Hook, Connecticut, for “The second to last summer,” published Aug. 6, 2013 on sippingemergers.com. Zakur’s blog post placed first in the Family Participation/Youth Outdoor Education Category of the Blog Contest.
- Radio/Podcast: Dan Small, of Belgium, Wisconsin, for “Youth turkey calling champ,” broadcast April 13, 2013, on the Outdoor Radio Network – WHBL. Small’s show placed first in the Family Participation/Youth Outdoor Education Category of the Radio/Podcast Contest.
- Television/Video/Webcast: David Majure, of Gilbert, Arizona, for “The healing waters at silver creek,” broadcast Oct. 28, 2013, on http://www.azgfd.gov. Majure’s segment placed first in the Fishing Category of the Television/Video/Webcast Contest.
- Photography: James Smedley, of Wawa, Ontario, Canada, for “Kayaking Superior,” published on the Northern Ontario travel website. Smedley’s photo placed first in the Outdoor Fun and Adventure Category of the Photography Contest.
