Mack’s Lure Strikes Again with North Carolina Kokanee Record

It’s getting to be a familiar story—the new game fish size records just keep on coming.
At least they do for a growing tackle company located in Eastern Washington State. The company is Mack’s Lure which is headquartered in Wenatchee, Washington.
Mack’s Lure’s unique products already hold recent state or national weight records for game fish caught in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, California and Nevada. Now you can officially add North Carolina to the list.
The new North Carolina record is for Kokanee. The record fish was caught by an angler named Fred Mix, from Rainbow Springs, N.C. The fish weighed 3-pounds, 15-ounces and was caught from Nantahala Lake, which is located in the south western portion of the state.
Fred displayed an astute amount of patience all day long, catching both Kokanee and Brown Trout. Towards the end of the day however, his rod tip began to exude the illustrious rod tip dance. Fred was trolling with a 4.4” Mack’s Lure Double D Dodger®, and a home made spinner with a 1.1 Blue Scale Smile Blade®. After landing this landlocked salmon, Fred immediately proceeded to his local bait and tackle shop to get the fish weighed. The staff at Bryant’s Tackle Shop called the local Department Fish and Wildlife Game Warden very quickly, who verified the weight. They too knew this was a fish for the record books.
Kokanee were introduced into the lake in the 1960’s as a forage based fish, used to feed Walleye. The numbers of these “silvers”, have quickly multiplied over time, making it some of the best fishing in North Carolina. The former North Carolina Kokanee record was caught in the same lake in June of 2009, which weighed 3-pounds, 8-ounces.
Since it appears Fred followed the list of rules on the Mack’s Lure website, he could be eligible for a free replica trophy mount provided by Mack’s Lure.
