33rd Annual LCI Father’s Day Fishing Derby Presented by Yamaha Finishes with Record Fish and Big Smiles

The 33rd LCI Father’s Day Fishing Derby by Yamaha is now anchored in the record books.  Families and friends gathered from all corners of New England and across the country to spend three days enjoying the spectacular fishing and beautiful scenery of Lake Champlain.  Derby anglers numbering about 5,500 caught, quite literally, tons of big, beautiful fish –  most of which were released live back into the lake.

After seeing tournament records get set in 2009, 2011, and 2013, two new derby records were set again in 2014. This year, Jeffrey Rebideau of Ludlow, VT landed a 17.49 pound lake trout on Saturday, beating out the previous record 17.09 pound fish which held the record for just a single year.  In the derby’s “Extraordinary” category, a 20.12 pound sheepshead caught by Shane Lamos of St. Albans broke the previous 19.34 pound record.

Both of these lucky anglers had purchased the Cash Extras option, qualifying them for the Tournament Record Doubledowns that net them each a $6,000 cash prize in addition to having a shot at thousands of dollars more in Super Bonus Cash, T.E.A.M. cash, and Angler of the Year Awards.

Overall, LCI anglers will take home nearly $200,000 in cash and prizes including $3,000 dollars in cash for first place in each of nine species categories, additional cash payouts for 2nd through 10th in the species categories, a nearly $40,000 boat package featuring a 23-foot Starcraft Stardeck 236 Cruise-N-Fish pontoon boat rigged with a 115 hp Yamaha four-stroke and Lowrance Elite 7, more than $60,000 in nightly raffle prizes, and more!  To see final results of the derby please visit: https://www.mychamplain.net/2014-fdd-results

All anglers are invited to join us Friday, June 20th for the LCI Awards Ceremony at the DoubleTree Hotel in Burlington.  The free ceremony begins at 7 p.m. and is open to the public. There will be free gear for the kids, LCI apparel for sale, thousands of dollars in door prizes, and a cash bar.

The LCI Derbies are sponsored, in part, by Yamaha Outboards, Starcraft Marine and the Smoker Craft Family of Boats, Jolley Stores,  Monster.com, Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing, Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife, FOX 44, WOKO 98.9 FM,. Lowrance, and Traxstech.

Year after year the fishing on Lake Champlain continues to improve thanks to state, federal, international and LCI’s efforts towards control of sea lamprey and restoration of native fish populations and the habitats in which they thrive.  LCI is proud to be part of these efforts.

Local businesses whose sales skyrocket with the influx of anglers and their families into the lake area during the derby see economic benefit from LCI’s derbies each year.  The unforgettable experiences created and shared by families and friends while fishing the derby yield social benefits that will live on for each angler’s lifetime.

Lake Champlain International, Inc. (LCI) is a federally recognized 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation actively involved in shaping the future of Lake Champlain’s water quality and fisheries.  Its mission is the conservation, restoration, and revitalization of Lake Champlain and its watershed.  LCI also educates, advocates, and motivates to ensure Lake Champlain is swimmable, drinkable, and fishable.
