CastAway Rods BASS Elite Series Pro Russ Lane Posts Top-10 Finish at BASSfest

CastAway Rods BASS Elite Series pro staffer Russ “Big Daddy” Lane landed enough bass during the inaugural June 11-15 BASSfest event on Tennessee’s Lake Chicamauga to earn his earn his third top-10 finish of the season.

Competition for the prime locations, along plenty of spectator boat traffic, made the fishing on Chicamauga challenging, but Lane still managed to bag a total of 66.13 pounds of bass and finish in the money.

“There were only a few areas holding larger schools of fish, so multiple anglers were fishing the best spots,” said Lane. “I shared an area with both Kevin VanDan and Jeff Kriet – a small rockpile in about 15 feet of water. The pressure and the boat traffic made the bass a little finicky, but we were all able to land some quality fish.”

Lane used a 7-foot Mag Heavy CastAway Skeleton SKX-7H rod to work two types of lures – a Big Bite Kriet Tail Worm on a Buckeye Magnum jig head, and a Buckeye Football Jig with a Big Bite Yo Daddy trailer – around the deep structure.

“The key to enticing the fish into biting was dragging these baits very slowly over the rocks and ledges,” noted Lane. “My CastAway 7-foot Mag Heavy Rod was perfect for this type of presentation, giving me the sensitivity I needed to detect subtle bites and pick-ups down deep, while also supplying plenty of hook-setting and fish-fighting power.”

Coming off his solid performance at BASSfest, Lane is hoping for another strong finish at the next Elite Series event, Aug. 7-10, on Pennsylvania’s Delaware River. “While I’ve never fished the Delaware before, I have competed on some tidal rivers,” said Lane. The Delaware has some of the most extreme tidal changes I’ve ever heard of – fluctuations up to six feet. That should make for some pretty tricky fishing conditions. Pre-fishing the waters and figuring out how to quickly adapt to the tides will be crucial.”
