The week of June 8 saw 249 shooters including Ladies, Juniors, Seniors, and Military categories converge on the small town of Parma, in rural Southwest Idaho for the 18th annual MGM Ironman 3 – Gun competition.
In what has been termed the most demanding 3-Gun match anywhere, shooters scramble in February to register online for the very limited and highly coveted spots in the elite event. The match sold out this year in 30 seconds.
One aspect of the MGM Ironman which sets it apart from other 3-gun matches is that pistol, rifle and shotgun are all used on every stage. With a maximum 1000 points possible, the MGM Ironman regularly offers unique and demanding stages including firing a pistol from a zip line, and plunging down a steep slide from a 30 foot tower, rifle in hand. Stage 5 involves carrying a 100 lb dummy to earn a valuable 60 second bonus. Stage 6 required targets to be engaged from positions in, and around an SUV, yet another stage involves shooting while driving a golf-cart through the course of fire.
The week -long event is broken in to two three day events and made of five shooter classes. Phase one sees 120 shooters from Open, Limited, Heavy Optics, and Trooper classes shoot ten stages involving up to 50 targets per stage. Each shooter will fire well in excess of 1000 rounds, 928 minimum, if there are no missed shots. The second phase sent 129 Scoped Tactical shooters to encounter the same demanding course.
Targets range in size from four inch knock over steel plates, to USPSA cardboard, to 20″x40″ ‘E’ Type steel silhouettes. They were placed from 1 to 890 yards, making the transition from close to far difficult and even close shots challenging. Varying winds demanded the most of all the shooters especially on the long-range targets.
Team MGM shooters posted impressive scores in all divisions with numerous top 5 and top 10 finishes.
