Jay Grogan of Fort Mitchell, Ala., weighed a five-bass limit totaling 23 pounds, 14 ounces Saturday to win the fourth Walmart Bass Fishing League Bulldog Division tournament of 2014 on Lake Eufaula. For his victory, Grogan earned $4,119.
“I started off mid-lake fishing in shallow grass with a swimjig,” said Grogan. “That’s where I caught my big fish, I think it weighed 7-11. I stayed there until about lunchtime, and then moved out and fished some deeper places in 6 to 8 feet of water around some stumps.
“The grass was anywhere from 2 to 3 feet deep,” explained Grogan. “The water is a little high right now and there are a lot of bream bedding. There was also a mayfly hatch. I think that’s why the grass was so good.
“Knowing it was a shallow bite was key,” Grogan said. “The big fish are just up shallow now.
“I think I’ve finished everywhere else inside the top-10 on Eufaula,” finished Grogan. “It feels pretty good to finally win.”
Grogan said that he fished a watermelon-colored Strikezone Lures Swim-Tastic Jig shallow and Texas-rigged Zoom worms on his deeper areas.

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 40 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and compete to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the Rayovac FLW Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
