Gold Tip’s Morgan, Gillingham Go 1-2 at Metropolis ASA Pro/Am

Gold Tip shooters again landed a decisive victory at the recent Metropolis, IL ASA Pro/Am (6/27-6/29), with Levi Morgan and Tim Gillingham taking first and second place, respectively, in the Men’s Pro Division. Morgan was hot right out of the gate on day one, putting up a 222 for his first 20 targets and maintaining a two-point lead. Gillingham, six points back after day one with a 216, stayed consistent and followed up with another 216 on day two. Morgan’s 212 on the second day’s round was good enough to post a two-point lead heading into the final shoot out, while Gillingham found himself in a three-way tie.

Ultimately, the final shoot out at Metropolis proved to be one for the ages. Morgan opened the door for the other shooters by posting eights on his first two targets of the shoot off. Gillingham, seizing the opportunity, hammered twelves on his first two targets, to take over the lead. But Morgan, sensing the need to put his foot on the gas pedal, went for broke and found the 14 ring on targets three and four to bring him within four points of the lead and tied for second. Gillingham’s 10 on the sixth target was answered by Morgan’s 14, bringing both Gold Tip shooters to a dead heat. With a 12 on the seventh target, Morgan claimed a two-point lead over “The Hammer,” with one target remaining. Both shooters found the 10-ring on the final target, which maintained Morgan’s two-point lead and gave him his third ASA victory on the year. Morgan and Gillingham were both shooting Gold Tip’s Triple X Pros. All three men on the Pro podium were using Bee Stinger stabilizer systems.

“Sunday was the craziest day of my archery career, I went from leading and then fell to 8th, then back to leading, then to six points back, “said Morgan. “Somehow the Lord pulled me together and after the smoke cleared I won by 2 points. Probably the best shoot-down I’ve ever been a part of. What a battle by all involved.”

To date, Gold Tip shooters, Levi Morgan and Tim Gillingham also hold the first and second positions in the ASA Shooter of the Year competition.

In the Women’s Pro division, Gold Tip Pro Staff member, Sharon Carpenter, took second place at Metropolis. Carpenter has consistently been at the top all season, shooting Gold Tip Ultralight Pro Series 22 shafts. In the Men’s Senior Pro Division, Art Brown, also earned a hard fought second place finish. Brown was shooting Gold Tip X-cutter Ultralight Pro Series arrows. In the Known 50 division, Gold Tip shooters, Nshan Thompson and Dan Jasa finished first and second, respectively.

At the ASA outdoor 3-D event, Pro Division contestants shoot two rounds of twenty targets from unmarked distances that vary in distance up to 50 yards. The five highest scores from the first two rounds qualify for the shoot-off to decide the winner. In the Known 50 class, shooters compete on the same course as the Pro Divisions, but are allowed to use rangefinders to determine actual target distance. Armed with “known” yardages, the contestants compete purely upon accuracy and strategy.

“Tournament after tournament, our Pros face challenging conditions, the toughest courses and stiff head-to-head competition, “ said Mitch McKay, Gold Tip Sales Director. “And every time, the toughness and constancy of their Gold Tip arrows and the rock-solid performance of their Bee Stinger stabilizer systems see them through to victory.”
