Randy Newberg was lucky to be one of four hunters assigned to a 64,000-acre ranch to hunt antelope in New Mexico, well at least lucky on paper. While the formula could produce a big buck for Newberg, he’s discovering this particular plot is notorious for hunters ending up with unfilled tags. With only three days to spot and stalk for antelope, and being only one of four hunters allowed on the ranch thanks to a recent tag draw, Newberg is excited to see what the land has to offer. However, the first scouting trip was giving zero buck sightings and zero track marks. “Antelope hunting is one of my favorite things to do – and New Mexico hunting makes it all the better,” said Newberg. “But the first day out I was at a loss on how to proceed. Big game hunting is all about managing expectations and by day two, I definitely had to do that.”
With time not on his side, and minimal buck sightings, will Newberg’s luck stay with him?

This season also includes segments highlighting The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF), which is the largest land access program in history. “LWCF provides millions of acres of public hunting access, yet it largely goes unnoticed by the hunting community,” commented Newberg. “If LWCF is not reauthorized by Congress in 2015, hunters will definitely notice that. My goal is to educate and inform so hunters can take actions locally and nationally.”
