General Tire Summit Cup Finale to Air Saturday on CBS

Jack Link’s Major League Fishing’s Alpena Event Championship Begins at 1 p.m. EST

The Championship Round of the “Jack Link’s Major League Fishing” General Tire Summit Cup will be broadcast on Saturday at 1 p.m. on the CBS network. The hour-long, special CBS Sports airing will show Major League Fishing action from the Alpena, Michigan region.

“We are really thrilled to have the special broadcast this week on CBS. This episode will show what is maybe the most remarkable day of fishing I’ve ever seen,” said Major League Fishing General Manager Jim Wilburn.

The Summit Cup was shown earlier this year on Outdoor Channel, America’s Leader In Outdoor TV. Wilburn said, however, that with the CBS broadcast, Major League Fishing is seeking to tap into a significant audience that didn’t have the opportunity to view the Championship Round during its previous run of broadcasts.

“We have a great partner in Outdoor Channel, and we’re delighted at the exposure that Major League Fishing is getting on the outdoor lifestyle cable network,” Wilburn said. “Major League Fishing and Outdoor Channel’s collective aim is to offer the unique brand of bass competition to a broad audience and, by scheduling the special during its Saturday afternoon sports block, CBS has given us the opportunity to do just that.”

The broadcast will be the third “major network” airing of the enormously popular Major League Fishing events. Major League Fishing Championship rounds have appeared once on NBC and once previously on CBS.

The Summit Cup will feature action from Grand Lake, a popular, 5,700-acre lake roughly 20 miles north of Alpena that is heavily populated by smallmouth bass. Anglers competing in the Championship Round are: Brent Erhler, Shaw Grigsby, Greg Hackney, Tim Horton, Aaron Martens and Kevin VanDam.

Major League Fishing – a partnership involving the world’s top anglers and Outdoor Channel – offers intense bass fishing events designed to bring high-level challenges to 24 competitors. Anglers are not informed where they will fish until the morning of each competition. They are allowed only 15 minutes of ride-around preparation.

Anglers also compete with leader boards in each boat and are allowed to count every “scorable” bass that they catch.

“It’s a remarkable format that the anglers love, but it is challenging,” said Major League Fishing Commissioner Don Rucks.

“I promise you one thing, though,” Rucks said. “Folks that tune in to see this Championship Round from Alpena will see a performance or two that they might not see matched again in this lifetime.”
