Cabela’s 2014 King Kat Tournament Results for the Calamus Reservoir at Burwell, Nebraska

This past Saturday August 23, 2014 the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail hit the waters of the Calamus Reservoir at Burwell, Nebraska. With this the next to last qualifying event, it was a very important event to the anglers of Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado, South Dakota, Missouri and Iowa to be able to qualify for the Western Championship coming up September 19th & 20th on the Mississippi and Rock Rivers at Quad Cities, Iowa. Anglers in this part of the country will have one last chance to qualify on September 6th on the Missouri River at Council Bluffs, Iowa.
In the event over 70 top anglers from 9 different states were competing not only for the cash and prizes, but the opportunity to qualify for the 2014 Cabela’s King Kat East and West Championship. This year’s West Championship will be held September 19 & 20, 2014 on the Mississippi and Rock Rivers at Quad Cities, Iowa. The East Championship will be held October 3 & 4, 2014 on Lake Wateree at Camden, South Carolina. Be sure to check out our website at: www.kingkatusa.com. Results for the Top 5 Teams
Taking first place was the Alma, Kansas team of Joe Silva and Larry Schwalm with a total weight of 99.2 pounds and earning $3,000.00. Joe and Larry were fishing the North End of Calamus Reservoir from around 15-20 feet of water drifting down a channel using cut shad to land 10 fish for the day. The teams biggest fish weighed 26 pounds. Joe finished 3rd in 2013 at Burwell.
In second place was the Carlisle, Iowa team of Phil and Kristine Brown weighing in 76.1 pounds and earning $1,200.00. Phil and Kristine were also fishing the North End of the lake drifting in 20 feet of water. The team was also fishing a deep channel using chubs to land 10 fish for the day. Kristine caught all the big fish but said she had to have a good boat driver and a good net man so that’s why she brought along her husband Phil.
Third place went to Kevin Parks of Leroy, Kansas and Terry Fischer of Waverly, Kansas with 75.2 pounds and earning $500.00. Kevin and Terry were fishing the North End of the lake drifting in around 20 feet of water using cut shad to land a total of 17 fish for the day. The teams biggest fish for the day weighed 23 pounds. The team finished 2nd in 2013 at Burwell with 76.75 pounds.
The Bellevue, Nebraska team of Scott Hrbek and John Abe took fourth place with a weight of 72.8 pounds and earning $400.00. Scott and John like the others fished the deep channels on the North End of the lake in around 20-30 feet of water except they were drifting using blood bait to land 8 fish for the day. Team had a kicker of 24.70 pounds.
Fifth place went to Kearney, Nebraska team of Jeff Meyer and Chris Drew with a weight of 61.7 pounds and earning $300.00. Jeff and Chris followed the pack by fishing the Northern End of the lake drifting in around 20-25 feet of water using shad to catch a total of 12 fish for the day. Jeff Meyer had 2nd place Big Fish in 2013 at Burwell, Nebraska with 25.45lbs.
Taking Big Fish of the event was the team of Clint McCarter of Harveyville, Kansas & Jay Smith of St. Joseph, Missouri weighing in a 29.80 pound cat which made the team $700.00.
Cabela’s King Kat Free Kids Fishing Rodeo
In conjunction with the tournament Cabela’s King Kat held their Kids Rodeo on Saturday morning with over 30 local children attending the event. All the participants signed up for a chance to win one of 6-$1,000.00 scholarships to be drawn for at the Cabela’s Crappie USA Classic this fall. A big thanks goes out to Randy Wilson from the Cabela’s Store in Kearney, NE for bringing rod and reel combos for the kids rodeo and giveaways and all the help at the weigh-in.
Cabela’s King Kat, Crappie USA and our anglers have contributed nearly $322,000.00 to the “Outdoor Kids” Scholarships since 1997. We are very proud to be a part of the education process for the youngsters who participate in our tournaments as adult/youth teams and those who fish in the Cabela’s King Kat, “Kids Fishing Rodeos”.
