Founded in 2004, the Marion P. Hammer Woman of Distinction Award is named in honor of the first female President of the NRA. Hammer is widely respected for her grassroots efforts in firearm safety education, for her role as an influential advocate in advancing Florida’s firearms laws, and for creating the Eddie Eagle GunSafe program. This award recognizes the pioneering spirit in women who safeguard the Second Amendment and the shooting sports in their community, state, and nation, through advocacy and education in accordance with the goals of the NRA.
The Sybil Ludington Women’s Freedom Award is named for a 16-year old heroine of the American Revolution who risked her life to help achieve the goal of independence. Begun in 1995, the award recognizes women for their extraordinary dedication to promoting the NRA and preserving the Second Amendment at the national level through volunteerism, activism, and the education of others.
“Women activists and educators have been and will continue to be the keystone of freedom all over the world,” said Marion Hammer, the first woman to serve as the president of the NRA. “Now more than ever, our country needs a new generation of Sybil Ludingtons to protect our freedoms. It takes passion, courage, and sacrifice to stand up to those who seek to diminish our freedom and liberty. I am proud of NRA’s commitment to honoring those women who fearlessly defend our rights.”
