Ducks Unlimited Waterfowling Heritage Center Opens April 29

Bass Pro Shops at the Memphis Pyramid home to largest collection of waterfowl equipment ever

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – April 17, 2015 – Bass Pro Shops and Ducks Unlimited have created an interactive waterfowl and conservation experience like no other. Set to open at 6 p.m. April 29, the new Ducks Unlimited Waterfowling Heritage Center, inside Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid in Memphis, will allow visitors to learn about Ducks Unlimited, wetlands conservation, waterfowl, the history of waterfowl hunting in North America, and the important role that sportsmen and women have played in conserving our continent’s wildlife and habitat. The Waterfowling Heritage Center will offer exhibits and experiences for visitors of all ages, including displays featuring waterfowling collectibles, vintage firearms, and original art. In addition, a small theater will allow visitors to experience the excitement of an Arkansas flooded timber duck hunt through a video followed by a Laser Shot duck hunting game.

“Ducks Unlimited has been a proud conservation partner with Bass Pro Shops for many years,” said Ducks Unlimited CEO Dale Hall. “Through their continued generosity, the Ducks Unlimited Waterfowling Heritage Center is a spectacular way to cement that important partnership. The center will play a large part in honoring our hunting and conservation heritage, while also  educating Bass Pro Shops guests about DU’s vision of wetlands sufficient to fill the skies with waterfowl today, tomorrow and forever. And with both the Bass Pro Shops and DU Waterfowling Heritage Center logos gracing the south side of the Pyramid, this partnership will be a tremendous boost to public awareness of our brand and mission.”

Although DU’s reach is continental in scope, the organization is headquartered in Memphis. And, much like the Pyramid that dons its logo, DU has called the city home for more than 20 years.

“We’re particularly excited to partner with DU to celebrate the proud history and great work they do,” said Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris. “We will utilize the unique retail environment we’re creating to celebrate the (Mississippi) flyway and make this store the Waterfowl Center for the whole company.”

One of the largest retail stores in the world, Bass Pros Shops at the Pyramid includes:

  • Big Cypress Lodge, the first hotel inside a Bass Pro Shops with 105 rustic rooms and tree house cabins.
  • A 28-story glass elevator, the tallest freestanding elevator in America.
  • Two cantilevering glass-floored observation decks, providing breathtaking views of the Mississippi riverfront and flyway.
  • Mississippi River boat launch
  • A full-service restaurant and bar at the top of the Pyramid featuring a circular aquarium.
  • Uncle Buck’s Fishbowl and Grill with 13 lanes of underwater-themed bowling, dining and meeting space.
  • An immersive cypress swamp environment featuring 100-foot cypress trees.

The Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid grand opening ceremony begins April 29, at 6 p.m. The doors will open following a ribbon cutting ceremony at 6:30 p.m.

Opening night’s Evening For Conservation event will help raise money for conservation efforts. Bass Pro Shops will donate 50 cents of every dollar spent during the Evening for Conservation to nonprofit conservation organizations including Ducks Unlimited, among others.

Ducks Unlimited is the world's leader in wetlands and waterfowl conservation. DU got its start in 1937 during the Dust Bowl when North America’s drought-plagued waterfowl populations had plunged to unprecedented lows. Determined not to sit idly by as the continent’s waterfowl dwindled beyond recovery, a small group of sportsmen joined together to form an organization that became known as Ducks Unlimited. Its mission: habitat conservation. Thanks to decades of abiding by that single mission, Ducks Unlimited is now the world’s largest and most effective private waterfowl and wetlands conservation organization. DU is able to multilaterally deliver its work through a series of partnerships with private individuals, landowners, agencies, scientific communities and other entities.
