Founded by two New England gun designers, Smith & Wesson still proudly bears their name over a century and half later. This prestigious gun maker almost never came to be, as it is a little-known fact that the eponymous Smith and Wesson sold their first gun company—which focused on a lever-action pistol—to a shirt manufacturer. That shirt maker’s name was Oliver Winchester.
