Edge by Expedite Goose Magnet Decoy

I came across this  motion decoy and thought I better share this  product with my readers. The Goose Magnet by Edge is unique in several ways:

  • It is lightweight so you can carry dozens into the field in a backpack
  • Wind generated wing flapping is very realistic across a wide spectrum of wing movement
  • The Goose Magnet weather vanes to keep itself fully inflated
  • The material is durable and weather resistant and will get stronger with use
  • Paint definition is excellent
  • Folds into a small package
  • Head is flocked
  • Comes in Mallard Drake
You do not get the full effect of the Goose Magnet in the package. It looks flat and nothing like the decoy when in use. The wings are folded into the body and the head is tucked inside the body which actually helps protect the flocking. Instructions are provided for the short build steps as well as instructions on how to use and place the decoys in a spread. I have provided a video so you can see the rotation and wings. Also check out the pictures provided.

It is a simple one, two, three step operation to get the Goose Magnet assembled. The head slips down and through a slot in the material, the top of the wing material hooks over a notch provided in the head molding and then the wings are unfolded. The wing frame is riveted. As soon as you open the package you feel the unique material that is sort of stuff, but easily shaped. Paint detail is excellent.

The head also acts as the mount for a 1/2″ piece of conduit. Make sure your pipe is a loose fit as this will allow for the Goose Magnet to weather vane. Using this type of mount you can place several Goose Magnets on-pole at variable heights.

Be sure to pull the wings out to their fully extended width. Once they are in place they will stay put. The air pocket is held open by the head and catches wind very easily as you will see in the video. When mounted the tail is below the head and the Goose Magnet looks ready to land.

The wing motion ranges from hanging with the tips dropped as if the goose has set their wings to land, to a full flapping just as the bird is about to touch down. In a light wind you get the tips moving, but when the wind picks up, the wings move up and down in an extremely realistic motion. Take a look at the video below, in which you can see the entire range of motion from both the underside and top views.

I have been an avid hunter for most of my life with an emphasis on dove, duck and goose hunting.  I grew up in Missouri and was fortunate to share my father’s profession  as a waterfowl biologist while growing up.  I have hunted perhaps every corner of the state and currently lease an area that I waterfowl hunt on as often as possible. My profession is in academics, but  I also advise our nationally ranked  shooting team, I am a certified NRA shooting coach and I teach a course in Recreational Shotgun Shooting each fall. I love the shooting sports. My second passion is radio control airplanes.  I fly, write and blog for a national magazine and online forum often.
