Vortex Solo R/T Monocular

In the world of hunting, scouting and gathering data are crucial for success. Game cameras, feeders where legal, and setting up hide sites takes time and resources. This can give valuable insights into game patterns, quality, and quantity. Out in the field, however, conditions change, game reacts to predators, and weather conditions affect visibility in the environment. Having a magnified optic to assess these changes and being aware of dynamic game is key to a successful hunt. A rifle scope is great for identifying game in the moment but isn’t always convenient for surveying the terrain. Monoculars offer a tradeoff to binoculars and rifle optics in their weight and size. The options from Vortex offer versatility, glass clarity, and capability at a solid price. The Solo R/T model in particular strikes this balance the best.

The Reticle
Not all monoculars come with the feature of a ranging reticle, especially at this price point. The Solo R/T MRAD-based sub tensions give shooters that are familiar with MRAD angular measurements, and a little math, the ability to calculate ranges of targets. The reticle also features silhouettes for range targets on the fly. Pairing the Solo RT with knowledge of the terrain maximizes success when game wanders into the shooting lane.

The Construction
The Solo R/T is compact and lightweight, covered in rugged rubber armor, and built to handle plenty of abuse. The housing is nitrogen gas purged and is both waterproof and fog-proof. The fully multi-coated lenses punch way above their price point in clarity and resolution. The objective lens is 36 mm and is a fixed 8x magnification. The 393-foot linear field of view is exceptional for scanning the horizon or wood line. Weighing only 10 oz and 5.4 inches in length, it fits nicely in any chest pouch. The monocular also has a neck lanyard and soft carry case for various carry options. The robust carry clip is well-designed and fits perfectly on MOLLE webbing. Overall, the Solo R/T strikes a balance between size, weight, and features for well-built general-purpose monocular.

Use cases
Having a good general-purpose monocular in a hunting rig, hiking pack, or even in the center console of a vehicle is invaluable for any outing. It is beneficial for surveying new hunting property before the season kicks off. Conditions change as the day continues, a monocular is useful to understand how the changing light affects visibility and ever-changing terrain. While traversing unknown territory, having a tool for sighting what lies ahead or for locating the herd of game being tracked is crucial. Binoculars, while providing more clarity and magnification, are not always the best fit for observing on the move. Monoculars, especially the Solo R/T, offer a blend of size, weight, and capability that occupies a niche space in a gear bag. The pairing of an analog range reticle with a wide field of view at 8x magnification enables hunters and outdoorsmen alike to maintain field awareness in a compact, rugged package.

Navigating the wild requires insight and knowledge. Having the right tools while in the field provides additional capabilities to the experienced outdoorsman. That experience is earned one step at a time. Step outside and get a glimpse of what nature has to offer.
