The all new Flashback Cellular Trail Camera from Stealth Cam is getting back to one of the most tried and true methods for capturing stunningly clear nighttime photos, the white xenon flash!
As we coast in to the 2024 whitetail season in Michigan, we are very fortunate to have partnered with one of the best brands in the cellular trail camera space, Stealth Cam. This year, we have outfitted our hunting property with a number of new cameras from Stealth Cam and in this article we are going to break down one of those cameras, the Flashback White Flash Cellular Trail Camera. This camera is packed with features and to set it apart from the competition, Stealth Cam has integrated a white Xenon flash which makes the night time images you receive incredibly clear and in color! While the lore surrounding trail cams with white flash will make you think it will spook your deer, the Flashback has an incredibly short flash burst that is nearly imperceptible to wildlife. We’ve had this camera up on our property for most of the summer and we are big fans of what it can do for hunters. Let’s dive in.
What is a cellular trail camera?
While it may seem self explanatory to most, we still want to set a foundation of understanding for what we will be talking about in this article. A cellular trail camera is a device that is equipped with a cellular antenna and can send and receive data very similar to how your cell phone works. The benefit of a cellular trail camera is that you can receive images directly to your mobile device or computer without having to travel to your hunting property to retrieve them from an SD card. The Flashback White Flash Cellular Trail Camera is equipped with dual network coverage and allows the camera to communicate with either AT&T or Verizon towers. This is an extremely handy feature because in more rural areas you often have superior coverage from one of those two carriers and with dual network coverage, you will not be forced to sacrifice your upload speeds just because of your location.
What sets the Flashback Apart?
As mentioned before, the Flashback White Flash Cellular Trail Camera has an integrated True White Xenon flash to provide users with superior night time images. If you have been running trail cameras in the past or research animal behavior, you undoubtedly understand that wild game moves throughout the day and night and you can’t always count on that monster 10-point buck striking a pose at high noon. For this reason, having a camera that can capture images 24 hours a day is a must, but not all night time photography is equal. The type of flash and quality of camera lens will play a direct role in how crisp your photos are when taken after hours. By bringing the True White Xenon flash back to the Flashback White Flash Cellular Trail Camera, Stealth Cam has equipped it’s users with an incredibly powerful tool for game monitoring.
Another differentiator for the Flashback White Flash Cellular Trail Camera is an increased battery capacity over previous models of cellular trail cameras offered by Stealth Cam. In the spirit of creating an easy to use device that requires less hands on attention, Stealth Cam has doubled the capacity of the internal batteries compartment giving you a cellular trail camera with 16 internal AA batteries. When paired with lithium AA’s, the Flashback White Flash Cellular Trail Camera is going to continue performing long beyond older models and require less frequent trips to your hunting property in the off season. We are all busy and having the ability to monitor wildlife activity on the go is the name of the game with a cellular trail camera.
How do you access your photos?
A cellular trail camera such as the Flashback White Flash Cellular Trail Camera is only as good as the mobile app that it sends images too and luckily, Stealth Cam has knocked it out of the park with the Command Pro App. The Command Pro App is the iOS and Android compatible mobile app that Stealth Cam has developed to allow users to not only monitor wildlife activity remotely but also manage and adjust the settings of your Flashback White Flash Cellular Trail Camera while you are not in physical proximity to the device. You also have the option to access all of your images from the Flashback White Flash Cellular Trail Camera from a desktop browser as well. If you are a user of HuntStand, there are additional integrations available by linking your Command account and HuntStand. Once linked, you are able to view images directly within HuntStand making land management even easier.
Some of the key features of the redesigned Command app are:
- On Demand – Users can request HD images on-demand with a simple tap and have them delivered to their device in near real time.
- Camera sharing – Quickly share a camera with friends and family by inviting them via the Command app with their email address. Once they have joined, they have access to all of the same images that you do as well as limited controls.
- Mapping – Within the Command app you have access to satellite mapping layers including nationwide public lands and hunting lands.
- AI Subject Tagging – This feature will automatically determine what type of wildlife is present within your photo and tag it accordingly which makes sorting even easier.
What do we think of the Flashback Cellular Trail Camera?
We’ve had the Flashback White Flash Cellular Trail Camera set up for just over two months at one of our newly scouted locations on our hunting property. We’ve hunted this 640 lease for 4 years and along the way, we’ve discovered some areas that appear to be heavily trafficked by whitetail. One of the biggest mistakes a hunter can make when hunting their own private property is getting complacent over time. You may think you know exactly where the deer are and where you should be setting up year after year. The trouble with this mindset is that deer behavior will change, their bedding locations can be impacted by seasonal weather, and overabundance of deer in a location can force them to look for new territory.
We took a flyer this year on a location that is deeper in to the woods at a tried and true food plot we set up a couple of years back. We call this spot the “Penthouse” because it is the location with the highest elevation on our property. We began noticing clear patterns of where deer would enter and exit this specific plot so, at the end of last season we did some recon looking for the trails they use when moving out of the area of the Penthouse. What we discovered was a deer highway that begin at the border of our property which abuts 10,000 acres of State land and leads deeper in to the center of our property. We knew we wanted to have a camera in this location which we dubbed “Penthouse Ridge” to get a better sense of what was traveling through.
Penthouse Ridge became one of the most active locations on the property for mature deer with some really nice bucks hitting the location of the Flashback White Flash Cellular Trail Camera. When you begin getting images of deer that are above average for where you hunt, it really begins to stoke excitement for the upcoming season. With impressive animals traveling through, you want to be able to view them with equally impressive image clarity. The Flashback White Flash Cellular Trail Camera features an internal camera that is capable of taking photos up to 40MP which is comparable to the latest iPhones on the market. Not only are the images crisp, but the color is spot. if you are looking for high quality images, this camera is going to be a home run for you.
We’ve paired this camera with the SOL-PAK Solar Battery Pack which Stealth Cam offers and it has taken things to the next level for us. While the camera features an impressive 16AA capacity, we opted for the solar accessory because we live 4 hours from our hunting lease. It’s more difficult for us to make it up for a battery swap and so the solar capable battery was where we landed. In two months we have yet to deplete the battery or have any dips in performance.
In all, the capabilities of the Flashback White Flash Cellular Trail Camera paired with the Command Pro App have been delivering on the promises made by Stealth Cam. Having a highly capable camera in an area that is shaping up to be a high performing location on our hunting property has us excited for colder weather to hit and hunting season to commence!
