Whitetail Weekly: Great Expectations
Michigan Sportsman 07.25.11
As we entered the cabin and began taking off our boots and putting away our bows I remember listening to Chris as he told of the deer he had seen during that evenings hunt. When he had finished describing his exciting evening the attention turned to me and I was asked “what did you see tonight?” My response was short, but not so sweet. “Nothing” I said, “there are no deer out there when I’m there. I haven’t seen anything all year.”
It was barely even late October and I was already mentally frustrated and somewhat disappointed with the way things had been going for me on our property. The heart of the season was just beginning and I was about ready to write the whole thing off and call it a day.
How does that happen to a guy who spends most of the summer counting down the days till October 1st (75 days left as I sit here and write this), a guy who’s wife recently got mad at him because he got more excited than she’s ever seen him when he saw a nice buck feeding in a food plot, a guy who daydreams about hunting every day of the year?
It happens when you let your expectations get ahead of your reality.
In the years leading up to last season our property had been improving steadily each year. We had put in a lot of work improving the land by doing habitat work and adding food plots. Our land owner put in 40 acres of canola to our south and Mother Nature was also helping out by turning an area that had been clear cut into a thick area full of cover and browse. All of those improvements had lead to increased deer sightings, increased frequency of decent buck sightings and overall better hunting in general.
