NRA Rifle Department Gearing Up for 2012 National Indoor Championships

I recently sat down with H.Q. Moody, NRA’s National Manager of the Rifle Department to learn more about the National Indoor Championships, the largest competitive shooting matches that NRA runs. According to Moody, there were 296 sectionals and over 4,200 entries in the National Indoor Championships, and he suspects that that number will be even higher in 2012.

“Based on where we were at this time last year, we’re looking at having even more matches and more competitors for 2012,” shared Moody. “We currently have 108 matches on the books for next year and now is when they really start to roll in.”

Moody is referring to more sectionals, or the matches that comprise the National Indoor Championships. Each year beginning in January, clubs and ranges across the country hold matches (also known as sectionals) where local competitors and teams compete under the same rules.

Once the match has been fired, all scores and the targets of the top three competitors and top team are sent to NRA Headquarters for review. Once all of the scores and top competitor targets are received, the results are compiled to determine the National Winners of each championship.

“12 individual championships fall under the umbrella of the National Indoor Championships,” shared Moody, adding that this does not include Collegiate or Pistol championships.

Disciplines for these championships include Smallbore and Air Rifle, and are comprised of championships for Juniors as well as Open Championships, which anyone can compete in. Moody also tells us that BB Gun and Light Rifle Championships will be added in 2013.

For the past few years, the Junior International Air Gun Championship and the Junior 4 and 3-Position Championships have been the most popular championships, and 2012 is looking to be no exception.

The championships run through mid-March for the Open category, and mid-April for Juniors, so if you’d like to shoot in a sectional for the National Indoor Championships, contact our Rifle Department at rifle@nrahq.org. You can also contact them if your club or range is willing to host a sectional, Moody told us.

“We’re always looking for sponsors to put on matches!”
