Drinking Alcohol On These Popular Michigan Rivers Could Cost You This Summer

Drinking a few cold ones on three popular Michigan rivers this summer could cost you a hefty fine, or even time in prison.

The National Forest Service made the announcement Wednesday that alcohol consumption will be prohibited on the following Michigan rivers within the Huron-Manistee National Forests:

  • AuSable River
  • Manistee River
  • Pine River

The order is set to go into effect the Friday before Memorial Day to the Monday of Labor Day, when alcohol will be banned on portions of the rivers including within 200 feet of the rivers. Violators of these restrictions could be fined up to $5,000 or face 5 years in prison.

The Forest Service cited pollution, disturbing fish/wildlife habitat and more people using the areas as the main reasons for putting this into action. The order will not apply to private land or designated campgrounds.
