Form Factor and Weight
One of the standout features of the MSR PocketRocket 2 is its compact form factor. When folded, it occupies minimal space, making it incredibly portable and easy to carry in a backpack. If you wanted to, you could probably fit it in your pocket. Its lightweight design is a blessing for backpackers who prioritize reducing the weight of their gear. Weighing only 73 grams, it won’t burden your pack or add to the strain on your shoulders during long hikes. Additionally, the stove comes with a dedicated storage case that ensures protection and prevents any damage to other items in your pack and of course the PocketRocket 2 itself. Its small footprint and negligible weight make it an excellent choice for those who value efficiency and minimalism in their outdoor gear. But how does it work out in the field?
Field Testing
During recent field testing, the MSR PocketRocket 2 consistently exceeded expectations. Its performance in various outdoor conditions was exemplary. Igniting the stove was a breeze, thanks to a shielded ignition chamber that helps protect the escaping gasses from gusts of wind. I attempted to light the PocketRocket with a flint and steel combination but was unable to get the burner ignited, thankfully I had a lighter as a backup and that worked just fine – I’m not certain if its actually possible to ignite the PocketRocket 2 this way but more attempts for a simpler ignition solution will be made down the road that doesn’t require fuel.
The resultant flame from the ProcketRocket is intense. Even in windy environments, the wind-resistant burner design proved its worth, maintaining a steady flame and preventing frustrating flameouts. This feature was particularly impressive, as it saved valuable time and despite the intense flame, didn’t seem to burn through fuel all that fast. If you’ve never used a PocketRocket stove before, I’ll explain where the name probably comes from – it’s really loud when it’s on full blast, kind of like a rocket. This is probably the biggest downside of the MSR PocketRocket 2. The flame, while virtually windproof due to its high-velocity jet output, is extremely loud.
The flame control valve offered precise temperature regulation, allowing for anything from a gentle simmer to a roaring boil. This flexibility made it suitable for a wide range of cooking tasks, from quick coffee breaks to preparing meals when just camping out of my truck. The pot supports provide a stable base for different pot sizes, eliminating concerns about wobbly cookware. This stability, coupled with the stove’s low center of gravity, contributed to a safe and secure cooking experience. For my last camping trip with the PocketRocket, I brought along a titanium pot for boiling water – out of curiosity I also attempted to boil water using this same pot and the MSR Pocket Rocket certainly boils the water much faster and also doesn’t leave as much nasty residue on the bottom of the pot!
The MSR PocketRocket 2 demonstrated exceptional fuel efficiency, ensuring that a single canister lasted for an extended duration. This efficiency is a significant advantage for backpackers, as it reduces the need to carry additional fuel, lightening the load even further. They come in a wide variety of sizes from small 4 oz canisters to much larger ones for extended camping trips – overall these aren’t too expensive but they aren’t quite as cheap as using fuel found in the field (wood).
Final Thoughts
The MSR PocketRocket 2 deserves its place among the top backpacking stoves available today. Its lightweight and compact form factor, coupled with its remarkable performance, make it an excellent choice for outdoor enthusiasts. From quick boiling times to precise flame control and wind resistance, this stove excels in all the essential areas. The MSR PocketRocket 2 strikes a perfect balance between weight, size, and functionality, making it an indispensable companion for backpackers, campers, and hikers.
The stove’s impressive specifications and features, such as its minimal weight of 73 grams and folding design, contribute to its exceptional portability. It easily fits into any backpack without adding unnecessary bulk or weight. The included storage case adds an extra layer of protection and keeps the stove secure during transport. Whether you’re embarking on a thru-hike or a weekend camping trip, the PocketRocket 2 takes up minimal space and ensures you have a reliable cooking solution on hand.
During field testing, the MSR PocketRocket 2 proved to be a dependable workhorse. Igniting the stove was a hassle-free experience when using the right tools, and the flame control valve allowed for precise temperature adjustments. This level of control is essential when cooking in the wilderness, as it enables you to simmer delicate sauces or achieve a rolling boil for quick meals or a hot cup of coffee in the morning. The stove’s wind-resistant burner design lived up to its promise, withstanding gusty conditions and maintaining a steady flame. It eliminated the frustration of constantly relighting the stove due to sudden gusts of wind, saving time and energy.
In conclusion, the MSR PocketRocket 2 is a standout backpacking stove that combines exceptional performance, portability, and durability. Its lightweight design and compact form factor make it an ideal choice for backpackers and outdoor enthusiasts looking to minimize the weight of their gear. The stove’s efficiency, precise flame control, wind resistance, and stability make it a reliable companion in a variety of outdoor conditions. Whether you’re boiling water for a quick cup of coffee or preparing a hearty backcountry meal, the MSR PocketRocket 2 is a trustworthy stove that won’t disappoint or break your wallet.
